A School Jacket and Tote Bag

Mommy finished our school set today. We got a jacket to match our school skirt from last week, and a tote bag to help carry all our supplies and our lunches.

The jacket closes with three small snap fasteners and decorative buttons. At first, we were going to choose brown buttons to match the yarn, but they looked really boring. So…we raided Mommy’s button stash and chose some bright ones that make the jacket look ultra cool!

Mommy let us have extra buttons, too, to decorate our new tote bag so it matches our school set.

We weren’t sure though that we would even get the tote bag. Now that Callie is an “only” cat, her dinnertime has become very important to her. At 3:30 today, she started meowing at Mommy, trying to convince her it was dinnertime.

Mommy bought Callie a new dry food bowl, because she is getting old, and it is more comfortable for her to use. She uses it all day, too, but once she decides it is time for her wet food dinner, she totally ignores her dry food bowl!

She kept bugging Mommy all afternoon to feed her dinner, but good thing for us, Mommy kept telling her to go and eat some dry food, until she finished our tote bag. Whew!

School Jacket and Tote Bag for Kruselings

Materials:

2.75 mm knitting needles (UK – 12, US – 2)

2.75 crochet hook (UK – 12, US – 2)

Fingering yarn 

3 small snap fasteners

3 small buttons for jacket

4 small buttons for tote bag (optional)

Tension:

7 stitches per 1 inch/2.5 cm

Abbreviations:

K – knit

P – purl

Dec – decrease by working two stitches together

Tog – together

M 1 – increase one by inserting the right hand needle under the strand of yarn in the row beneath and between, the stitch just worked and the next stitch; place the picked up loop onto the left hand needle; knit into the back of the loop and slip the worked stitch off the needle

Sl – slip next stitch

Psso – pass slipped stitch over stitch just knit – decrease made

Sts – stitches

Stitches:

Garter Stitch: Knit every row.

Stockinette Stitch: 1) Knit.

                              2) K 1, Purl to last stitch, K 1.

                              These two rows form pattern.

Jacket:

Beginning at lower back, cast on 17 stitches.

Knit 3 rows in garter stitch.

4) K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.

Beginning with a knit row, work 4 rows even in stockinette stitch.

9) Cast off 2 stitches for sleeve underarm, knit to end of row.

10) Cast off 2 stitches for sleeve underarm, purl to last stitch, k 1.

11) K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last 3 stitches, k 2 tog, k 1.

12) K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1 (11 sts).

Work even in stockinette stitch for 5 rows.

Wrong side facing, divide for front and back:

18) K 1, p 2, cast off 5 stitches, p 1, k 1.  You now have 2 sets of 3 stitches for shoulders. Turn.

  1. Working on 3 stitches at beginning of row, k 3.  Place remaining 3 stitches on a spare piece of yarn or a stitch holder (I used a small safety pin).
  2. K 1, p 1, k 1.
  3. Knit.
  4. K 1, p 1, k 1.
  5. K 2, m 1, k 1.
  6. K 1, m 1 purl ways, p 2, k 1.
  7. K 4, m 1, k 1.
  8. K 1, m 1 purl ways, p 4, k 1.
  9. K 6, m 1, k 1,
  10. Cast on 3 stitches, k 3, purl to last stitch, k 1.

11) Knit.

12) K 3, purl to last stitch, k 1.

13) Knit.

14) K 3, purl to last stitch, k 1.

15) Knit.

16) K 3, purl to last stitch, k 1.

17) Cast on 2 stitches for sleeve underarm.  Knit to end of row.

Keeping the 3 placket stitches in garter stitch, work even in stockinette stitch for 5 rows.

Work 3 rows even in garter stitch.  Cast off.

Return the 3 stitches on spare yarn or stitch holder, back onto needle.

  1. Knit.
  2. K 1, p 1, k 1,
  3. Knit.
  4. K 1, p 1, k 1.
  5. K 1, m 1, k 2.
  6. K 1, purl to last stitch, m 1 purl ways, k 1.
  7. K 1, m 1, k 4.
  8. K 1, purl to last stitch, m 1 purl ways, k 1.
  9. K 1, m 1, k 6.
  10. K 1, purl to last stitch, m 1 purl ways, k 1.
  11. Cast on 3 stitches, knit to end of row (11 sts).
  12. K 1, p 7, k 3.
  13. Knit.
  14. K 1, p 7, k 3.
  15. Knit.
  16. K 1, p 7, k 3.
  17. Knit.
  18. Cast on 2 stitches for sleeve underarm, k 1, purl to last 3 stitches, k 3.

Keeping the 3 placket stitches in garter stitch, work even in stockinette stitch for 6 rows.

Work 3 rows even in garter stitch.  Cast off.

Sleeves (Made alike):

Right side of garment facing, pick up 2 stitches in underarm, 12 stitches across armhole edge, and 2 stitches in underarm (16 sts).

Knit 1 row.

Right side of garment facing and beginning with a knit row, work even in stockinette stitch for 20 rows.  

Work 3 rows in garter stitch.  Cast off.

Neck Edging:

Right side of garment facing, pick up 3 stitches across first packet, 6 stitches across side front neck, 5 stitches across back, 6 stitches across side front neck, and 3 stitches across second placket (23 sts).

Knit 2 rows in garter stitch.  Cast off.

Finishing:

Sew side and sleeve seams.  Darn in all loose yarn ends.  Close front opening using 3 small snaps evenly spaced.  Sew 3 small buttons over snaps on right side of garment.

Tote Bag:

Cast on 19 stitches.

Work 16 rows even in stockinette stitch.

Shape top and handle:

  1. K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last 4 stitches, k 2 tog, k 2.
  2. K 2, purl to last 2 stitches, k 2.

Repeat rows 1 and 2, until there are 7 stitches left on hook.

Next:

  1. k 2, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, k 2.
  2. K 1, k 2 tog, k 2.
  3. K 1, k 2 tog, k 1.

Work 11 rows even in garter stitch.

Right side of bag facing:

  1. k 1, m 1, k 2.
  2. K 1, m 1, p 1, k 2.
  3. K 2, m 1, k 1, m 1, k 2.
  4. K 2, purl to last 2 stitches, k 2.
  5. K 2, m 1, k to last 2 stitches, m 1, k 2.

Repeat rows 4 and 5 until there are 19 stitches on needle, ending with a row 5.

Work 15 rows even in stockinette stitch.

Cast off.

Finishing:

Sew the bottom of the bag and sides together,  ending the side seams on the first row of the knit 2 garter stitch edgings.  Darn in all loose yarn ends.

If desired, sew a button to each side of the bag at top opening, and 1 button on each side of the bag, where the garter stitch handle begins.

Aiguilles 2.75 mm (UK – 12, US – 2) Crochet 2.75 (UK – 12, US – 2) Fingering wire.
3 petits boutons pression

3 petits boutons pour veste
4 petits boutons pour le bag (en option) Tension :
7 mailles = 2.5 cm  

Jacket :

En commençant par le bas du dos, monter 17 mailles.
Tricoter 3 rangs au point mousse.
4) 1 m end, m env jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 m end.
En commençant par un rang endroit, tricotez 4 rangs en jersey.
9) Rabattre 2 mailles pour les aisselles des manches, tricoter à l’endroit jusqu’à la fin du rang.

10) Rabattre 2 mailles pour la manche sous les bras, m env jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 m end.
11) 1 m end, 1 surjet simple, m end jusqu’aux 3 dernières m, 2 m end ens, 1 m end. 12) 1 m end, m env jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 m end (11 m).

En jersey tricoter 5 rangs.

Envers, diviser pour le recto et le verso :

18) 1 m end, 2 m env, rabattre 5 m, 1 m env, 1 m end. Vous disposez maintenant de 2 séries de 3 mailles pour les épaules. Tourner.

1. 1. Tricoter sur 3 mailles en début de rang, 3 m end. Placer les 3 mailles restantes sur un arrêt de mailles (j’ai utilisé une petite épingle de sûreté).

2. 1 m end, 1 m env, 1 m end.

Remettre les 3 mailles de l’arrêt de mailles, sur l’aiguille.

  2. 1 m end, 1 m env, 1 m end,
  3. Mailles endroit.
  4. 1 m end, 1 m env, 1 m end.
  5. 1 m end, 1 aug dans la m suivante, 2 m end.
  6. 1 m end, m env jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 aug env dans la dernière m, 1 mend.
  7. 1 m end, 1 aug dans la m suivante, 4 m end.
  8. 1 m end, m env jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 aug env dans la dernière m, 1 mend.
  9. 1 m end, 1 aug dans la m suivante, 6 m end.

10. 1 m end, m env jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 aug env dans la dernière m, 1 m end.

  1. Monter 3 mailles, tricoter jusqu’à la fin du rang (11 s).
  2. 1 m end, 7 m env, 3 m end.
  3. Mailles endroit.
  4. 1 m end, 7 m env, 3 m end.
  5. Mailles endroit.
  6. 1 m end, 7 m env, 3 m end.
  7. Mailles endroit.

18. Monter 2 mailles pour la manche sous les bras, 1 m end, m env jusqu’aux 3 dernières m, 3 m end.

En gardant les 3 mailles de la patte de boutonnage au point mousse, tricoter pendant 6 rangs.
Tricoter 3 rangs au point mousse. Rabattre.
Manches (X2) :

Côté endroit du vêtement face à vous, relever 2 mailles sous les bras, 12 mailles sur le bord de l’emmanchure et 2 mailles sous les bras (16 m).
Tricoter 1 rang endroit.
Côté endroit du vêtement face à vous et en commençant par un rang endroit, tricoter en jersey pendant 20 rangs.

Tricoter 3 rangs au point mousse. Rabattre.

Bordure du cou :

Côté en droit du vêtement face à vous, relever 3 mailles sur la patte, 6 mailles sur le côté devant de l’encolure, 5 mailles sur le dos, 6 mailles sur le côté devant de l’encolure et 3 mailles sur la deuxième patte (23 m).
Tricoter 2 rangs au point mousse. Rabattre.

Finition :

Coudre les côtés et les manches. Fermez l’ouverture devant à l’aide de 3 petits bouton- pression régulièrement espacés. Coudre 3 petits boutons sur les bouton-pression sur le côté droit du vêtement.
Sac à main :

Monter 19 mailles.
Tricoter 16 rangs en jersey.
Forme du dessus et de la poignée :

  1. 2 m end, 1 surjet simple, m end jusqu’aux 4 dernières m, 2 m end ens, 2 m end.
  2. 2 m end, m env jusqu’aux 2 dernières m, 2 m end.

Répétez les rangs 1 et 2 jusqu’à ce qu’il reste 7 mailles.

La suite :

  1. 2 m end, 1 surjet double, 2 m end.
  2. 1 m end, 2 m end ens, 2 m end.
  3. 1 m end, 2 m end ens, 1 m end.

Tricoter 11 rangs au point mousse. Côté endroit du sac face à vous :

  1. 1 m end, 1 aug dans la m suivante, 2 m end.
  2. 1 m end, 1 aug dans la m suivante, 1 m env, 2 m end.
  3. 2 m end, 1 aug dans la m suivante, 1 m end, 1 aug dans la m suivante, 2 m end.

4. 2 m end, m env jusqu’aux 2 dernières m, 2 m end.

Répétez les rangs 4 et 5 jusqu’à ce qu’il y ait 19 mailles sur l’aiguille, en terminant par le rang 5.
Tricoter 15 rangs même en jersey.
Rabattre.

Finition :

Coudre le fond du sac et les côtés ensemble en terminant les coutures latérales sur le

premier rang des bordures tricotées au point mousse.

Si vous le souhaitez, coudre un bouton de chaque côté du sac au niveau de l’ouverture

supérieure, et 1 bouton de chaque côté du sac, là où commence l’anse au point mousse.

    • It’s only Michael who doesn’t want to go to school sometimes, Auntie R., and we don’t think he would like our tote bag. Mommy might have to make him a different outfit and bag!

  3. Merci pour ce nouveau tuto, j’ai tricoté la jupe, il n’y a plus qu’à la coudre et mettre la fermeture. J’ai commencé un corsage au crochet, en attendant le tuto de la veste.
    Très bel ensemble pour profiter de ce début d’automne clément.

    • A crochet bodice sounds lovely! I am sure your girl will be very excited to have her new outfit. 🙂 I might try to make this outfit for another size doll, too.

      Un corsage au crochet, ça a l’air adorable ! Je suis sûr que votre fille sera très excitée d’avoir sa nouvelle tenue. 🙂 Je pourrais aussi essayer de confectionner cette tenue pour une poupée d’une autre taille.
