The Swing Coat Pattern

Dorothy is still modelling the Swing coat and matching hat that Mommy made for her last week. As promised, here is the pattern, all typed up now:

A Knitted Swing Coat for Sasha  

Materials: 

3.00 mm knitting needles

1 Ball – Premier® Yarns Cotton Fair™ Yarn (Weight: Fine (2) Contents: 52% cotton, 48% acrylic Skein Weight: 3.5 oz. / 100 g Yardage: 317 yd. / 290 m)

8 medium size buttons; 6 small buttons

Tension:

6 stitches per 1 inch/2.5 cm, using 3.00 knitting needles

Abbreviations:

Knit – k

Purl – p

M 1 – Make one inc (pick up loop between stitch just worked and next stitch to be knitted, knit through loop from the top side e.g., the result is a new twisted knit stitch)

M 1 purl-ways – Make one purl-ways inc (pick up loop between stitch just worked and next stitch to be worked, purl through loop from the bottom side e.g., the result is a new twisted purl stitch)

Sl – slip

St – stitch

Dec – decrease (k 2 tog or p 2 tog)

Psso – pass slipped stitch over stitch just knitted, decreasing one

Pm – place marker

Sl m – slip marker

Stitches Used:

Stockinette stitch – 1) Knit. 

        2) Knit 1, purl to last stitch, knit 1.

Rib stitch – 1) K 2, *p 1, k 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

                   2) *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

Moss/Seed stitch – 1) *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.  Repeat row 1 continuously.

Knitted Swing Coat:

Cast on 40 stitches.

1. K 2, *p 1, k 1,* Repeat from star to star to end of row.
2. K 2, *p 1, k 1,* Repeat from star to star to end of row.
3. Buttonhole row: (K 1, p 1) twice, k 4, m 1, pm, k 2, pm, m 1, k 4, m 1, pm, k 2, pm, m 1, k 8, m 1, pm, k 2, pm, m 1, k 4, m 1, pm, k 2, pm, m 1, k 4, p 1, yo, p 2 tog, k 1.
4. (K 1, p 1) twice, k 1, purl to last 5 stitches, k 1, (p 1, k 1) twice.
5. (K 1, p 1) twice, *k to next marker, m 1, sl m, k 2, sl m, m 1,* repeat from star to star until end of markers, k to last 5 stitches, k 1, (p 1, k 1) twice.
6. (K 1, p 1) twice, k 1, purl to last 5 stitches, k 1, (p 1, k 1) twice.

Repeat rows 5 and 6, six times (12 rows total, ending with 96 sts).

Next row: work as for row 5, but make a buttonhole over the last 4 stitches as for row 3: p 1, yo, p 2 tog, k 1.

Work 7 rows, beginning with a purl row, and continuing to increase 8 stitches each right side row as before.  End with a purl row (128 sts).

Divide for first sleeve:

1) (K 1, p 1) twice, k 44, turn. If desired, leave remaining stitches on a needle holder or a strand of spare yarn.

2) K 1, p 26, k 1, turn (28 sts). If desired, leave remaining stitches on a needle holder or a strand of spare yarn.

Work six rows even in stockinette stitch.

9) K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last 3 stitches, k 2 tog, k 1.

10) K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.

Work 6 rows even in stockinette stitch.

17) K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last 3 stitches, k 2 tog, k 1.

18) K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.

Work 6 rows even in stockinette stitch.

25) (K 1, p 2 tog, k 1, *p 1, k 1,* repeat from star to star to end of row (23 sts).

26) *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

Repeat row 26, 4 times more.  Cast off in pattern.

Second sleeve:

Rejoin yarn to centre back stitches.

1. K 60, turn.  If desired, leave remaining stitches on a needle holder or a strand of spare yarn.
2. K 1, p 26, k 1.

Complete as per first sleeve.

Join sleeve seams.

Body of coat:

Rejoin yarn to right front.  

1. Knit to last 4 stitches, (p 1, k 1) twice.
2. (K 1, p 1) twice, k 1, p 15, pick up 2 stitches at base of sleeve seam, p 32, pick up 2 stitches at base of sleeve seam, p 15, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
3. (K 1, p 1) twice, k 14, (k 2 tog) twice, k 30, (k 2 tog) twice, k 14, (p 1, k 1) twice.

Continue to increase two stitches at the beginning and end of each moss stitch panel, as shown, on every knit row (you may want to use markers to help keep your panel moss stitches correctly), until you have worked 12 rows from the last buttonhole row.

Continue increasing moss stitch panels on this next row, but also make a buttonhole over the last 4 stitches as for row 3: p 1, yo, p 2 tog, k 1.

From here on, increase moss panels on every second knit row only.

When another 12 rows from last buttonhole have been worked, make another buttonhole in the next row over the last 4 stitches as for row 3: p 1, yo, p 2 tog, k 1.

When each moss stitch panel has 23 stitches, work 3 rows even, beginning and ending with a purl row.

Next row: (k 1, p 1) 6 times, m 1, (p 1, k 1) 15 times, p 1, m 1, *(p 1, k1) 16 times, p 1, m 1,* repeat from star to star 3 times, (p 1, k 1) 15 times, p 1, m 1, (p 1, k 1) 11 times, p 1, m 1, (p 1, k 1) 6 times to end of row (215 sts). 

2) *K 1, p 1,* repeat from to star to star to last stitch, k 1.

Repeat row 2 twice.

5) Repeat row 2, but also make another buttonhole in the next row over the last 4 stitches as for row 3: p 1, yo, p 2 tog, k 1.

Repeat row 2 five times more.

Cast off in pattern.

Collar: 

With right side facing, at neck edge, skip the first moss stitch placket, and beginning in next stitch, pick up 31 stitches across neck to the beginning of the next moss stitch placket.  Work two rows in ribbing as follows:

1. K 2, *p 1, k 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.
2. *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.
3. *K 2, m 1, k 3, m 1,* repeat from star to star to last 6 stitches, k 2, m 1, k 2, m 1, k 2 (43 sts).
4. *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

Repeat row 4, six times more.  Cast off in pattern.

Darn in all loose yarn ends.  Sew medium buttons to left placket to correspond to buttonholes.

Sew a small button to the top of each moss stitch panel.

Swing Coat Matching Hat:

Cast on 61 stitches.

1. *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

Repeat row 1, seven times more.

9) K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.

10) K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.

Work four rows in ribbing as follows:

11) *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

12) K 2, * p 1, k 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

13) *K 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

14) K 2, * p 1, k 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.

15) K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.

16) Knit.

17) k 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.

Continue in stockinette stitch for another 10 rows even.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail to gather stitches and sew hat seam.

Draw yarn through remaining 7 stitches, and pull tightly to to close crown of hat.  Sew back seam of hat with right sides together, until you reach the moss stitch brim of hat.  Turn hat right side out, and sew brim seam with wrong sides of hat together.  Turn brim up and tack to back seam of hat to keep in place.  Sew a medium button to crown of hat and another to front brim, slightly off centre.

Continuer à augmenter deux mailles au début et à la fin de chaque panneau de point de riz, comme indiqué, sur chaque rang tricoté (vous pouvez utiliser des marqueurs pour vous aider à garder correctement le point de riz de votre panneau), jusqu’à ce que vous ayez travaillé 12 rangs à partir de la dernière boutonnière.

Continuer à augmenter les panneaux de point de riz sur ce rang suivant, mais aussi faire une boutonnière sur les 4 dernières mailles comme pour le rang 3 : 1 m env, 1 jeté, 2 m env ens, 1 m end.
À partir de là, augmentez les panneaux de mousse tous les deux rangs tricotés uniquement. Quand les 12 autres rangs à partir de la dernière boutonnière ont été tricotés, faire une autre boutonnière au rang suivant au-dessus des 4 dernières mailles comme pour le rang 3 : 1 m env, 1 jeté, 2 m env ens, 1 m end.

Lorsque chaque panneau de point de riz a 23 mailles, tricoter 3 rangs pairs, en commençant et en terminant par un rang envers.
Next row : (1 m end, 1 m env) 6 fois, 1 aug, (1 m env, 1 m end) 15 fois, 1 m env, 1 aug, *(1 m env, 1 m end) 16 fois, 1 m env, 1 aug,* répéter (*) 3 fois, (1 m env, 1 m end) 15 fois, 1 m env, 1 aug, (1 m env, 1 m end) 11 fois, 1 m env, 1 aug, (1 m env, 1 m end) 6 fois er finir le rang (215 m).

Sur l’endroit, au bord de l’encolure, sauter la première patte de point de riz et, à partir de la maille suivante, relever 31 mailles sur l’encolure jusqu’au début de la patte de point de riz suivante. Tricoter deux rangs en côtes ainsi : 2 m end, *1 m env, 1 m end*, répéter jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 m end.

2. *1 m end, 1 m env*, répéter jusqu’à la dernière m, 1 m end. 3. *2 m end, 1 aug, 3 m end, 1 aug* répéter jusqu’aux 6 dernières m, 2 m end, 1 aug, 2 m end, 1 aug, 2 m end (43

Rentrer les fils. Coudre les boutons moyens sur la patte de boutonnage gauche face aux boutonnières.

Passez le fil dans les 7 mailles restantes et tirez fermement pour fermer la couronne du bonnet. Faire la couture arrière du bonnet, endroit contre endroit, jusqu’à ce que vous atteigniez le bord en point de riz du bonnet. Retournez le chapeau à l’endroit et faire la couture
