This week, Mommy and Auntie R. signed up for a watercolour art class. Mommy let me come, too, but when we got to the building, all the doors were locked! We walked all around the building looking for an open door, but there weren’t any. We decided to wait at the front door, and after a bit, someone came, and opened it for us.
Inside, the classroom was pretty comfortable. We chose to sit at the front so we could see and hear the instructor well. While we waited for everyone else to arrive, the people running the workshop offered us some snacks. Mommy and I shared a bag of chips and a bottle of water.
There were two people running the workshop. One was a community resource person, and the other was an instructor from the local art museum and gallery. They were both super nice people.
The first thing we had to do was put water in the palette sections. Then, we were given little bits of watercolour paint to mix into the water. We got the colours blue, yellow and red.
After we created our three colours of paint, we mixed up other colours to fill our trays with colours we wanted to use.
The instructor showed us how to use six different techniques to water paint, but Mommy had too much water mixed in with her daubs of paint, so her creations didn’t turn out so well…
I offered to help Mommy paint her final picture, but she said she wanted to do it herself. Good thing there was a friendly dog I could play with while I waited for Mommy and Auntie R. to finish painting. This is Bali, the dog, getting a drink of water.
Auntie R. painted a beach scene. She kept saying this is where she wants to go this summer! Another of Mommy’s friends, painted an elegant tree.
Mommy should have taken me up on my offer to help her paint…
She had fun trying out the different techniques, but an artist she is not!
(Later, when Auntie S. saw Mommy’s painting, she said everyone has their own talent, and Mommy’s is with a needle and thread. I think Auntie S. is right.)
I guess what counted in the end, is that we all had a fun time at the workshop.
Anyway, we like the talents Mommy has, especially when we ask for new clothes, and she makes us something pretty. Vera wanted a new dress, and Mommy designed this one for her. (If you like it, Mommy is putting the pattern here at the end of our post.)
A few days after the workshop, Mommy had a visit with our other Auntie, S., and she gifted us these beautiful things for when we get our house. Don’t you just love the wonky dresser?! A true artist, named Paul Szewc, made it.
Before Mommy puts the pattern for Vera’s dress here, I wanted to show off a photo of the puppies, kittens and lamb we have for Mommy’s dollhouse. They are really, really old, like at least over 50 years old! They were made in Japan, and Mommy used to save her allowance to buy them, because they were quite expensive when they were sold. There are so many of them, we are going to try and convince Mommy to let us put a few of them in our rooms when we get our house…we sure hope she will agree!
Here is the pattern for Vera’s dress:
Kruselings One-shoulder Dress
Materials:
Fingering yarn in two colours
2.75 mm knitting needles (UK 12 – US 2)
2.75 crochet hook (UK 12 – US C/2)
4 small snaps
Tension:
8 stitches per 1 “/2.5 cm
Abbreviations:
MC – main colour
CC – contrast colour
K – knit
P – purl
K 2 tog – knit the next two stitches together as one – decrease made
Sl – slip a stitch
Psso – pass slipped stitch over stitch just knit – decrease made
Sc – single crochet
Sts – stitches
Rev sc – reverse single crochet
Stitches used:
Stockinette stitch – 1) Knit.
2) Knit 1, purl to last stitch, knit 1.
Ladder stitch – 1) Using MC, k 2, *slip 1 knit wise, k 5,* repeat from star to star to last 3 stitches, sl 1 knit wise, k 2.
2) Using MC, k 1, p 1, sl 1 purl wise, *p 5, sl 1 purl wise,* repeat from star to star to last 2 stitches, p 1, k 1.
3) Using CC, *k 5, sl 1 knit wise,* repeat from star to star to last 5 stitches, k 5.
4) Using CC, *k 5, sl 1 purl wise,* repeat from star to star to last 5 stitches, k 5.
Single crochet: Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull thread through all loops on hook.
Reverse single crochet: Work a sc in each stitch, but working backwards across row instead of forward, as would be usual.
Kruselings One-shoulder Dress:
Using MC, cast on 77 sts.
- Knit.
- Knit.
- Begin Ladder stitch: Using MC, k 2, *slip 1 knit wise, k 5,* repeat from star to star to last 3 stitches, sl 1 knit wise, k 2.
4) Using MC, k 1, p 1, sl 1 purl wise, *p 5, sl 1 purl wise,* repeat from star to star to last 2 stitches, p 1, k 1.
5) Using CC, *k 5, sl 1 knit wise,* repeat from star to star to last 5 stitches, k 5.
6) Using CC, *k 5, sl 1 purl wise,* repeat from star to star to last 5 stitches, k 5.
Repeat rows 3 to 6, nine times more, and then, rows 3 and 4, once. End off CC.
Continue in MC:
Decrease row: K 1, *k 3 tog,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1 (27 sts).
Bodice:
Beginning with a purl rows, work 7 rows in stockinette stitch, ending with a purl row.
8) Cast off 6 stitches, knit to end of row.
9) Cast off 6 stitches, purl to last stitch, k 1 (15 sts).
10) K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1 (13 sts).
11) K 1, purl to last st, k 1.
12) K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1 (11 sts).
13) K 1, purl to last 3 sts, p 2 tog, k 1 (10 sts).
14) K 1, sl 1, psso, knit to end or row (9 sts).
15) K 1, purl to last 3 sts, p 2 tog, k 1 (8 sts).
16) K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1 (6 sts).
17) K 1, purl to last 3 sts, p 2 tog, k 1 (5 sts).
Continue in garter stitch for 12 rows even. Cast off.
With right sides together, sew strap to left back to form an armhole.
Left back placket:
Using MC, single crochet 1 stitch in each of the 27 garter stitch/edge stitches down left back of dress. Work 3 more rows of sc. End off.
Right back placket and lower hem:
Using MC, single crochet 1 stitch in each of the 27 garter stitch/edge stitches up right back of dress. Ch 1, do not turn, work one row reverse sc down right back and across lower hem of dress. End off.
Darn in all loose yarn ends.
Close dress back with 4 small snaps.
Using CC, crochet a chain of 100 stitches for dress belt. Tie belt at waist of dress.

Point Echelle :
1) Couleur principale : 2 m end, *glisser 1 m end, 5 m end* répéter jusqu’aux 3 dernières m, glisser 1 m end, 2 m end.
2) Couleur principale : 1 m end, 1 m env, glisser 1 m env, *5 m env, glisser 1 m env * répéter jusqu’aux 2 dernières m, 1 m env, 1 m end.
3) Couleur contrastante : *2 m end, glisser 1 m end * répéter jusqu’aux 5 dernières m, 5 m end.

Patte arrière droite et ourlet inférieur :
Couleur principale : Crocheter 1 maille serrée dans chacune des 27 mailles mousse/lisières du dos droit de la robe. 1 m en l’air, ne pas tourner, crocheter un rang de m serrées inversée dans le dos droit et sur l’ourlet inférieur de la robe. Arrêter.
Rentrer les fils.
Fermeture du dos de la robe : Coudre 4 petits boutons pressions.
Couleur contrastante : Crocheter une chaînette de 100 mailles pour la ceinture de la robe puis nouer à la taille de la robe.

We had lots of fun at the Water Colour Workshop. We will definitely have to sign up for another event again. (For the company and the snacks too! )
Love the dress and the tiny animals. So cute! They are surely collectors items like the ones we used to get in the tea box.
I had fun at the watercolour workshop, too, even if my skills were lacking…we definitely need to go to another event like this sometime. The little china figurines were quite expensive at the time, and I have not seen them again in all these years!

Mommy says she does not mind that she is not a great painter, because she still had fun and learned some interesting painting techniques, Auntie F., but Joy is going to teach us what she learned so maybe we will be the painters in our family! We are glad you like all the pretty things we got this week – Vera says her dress is the best, though!

Oh, we all love to go with Mommy on adventures…Joy was the lucky one that day, but we think she is also the most curious of us! And, maybe a little critical, too…Oh well, Mommy says it was all about having fun!

J’essaie aussi de faire des dessins à l’aquarelle, toute seule, chez moi, en regardant des tutos sur Youtube, ou dans des livres. Pas facile, le pinceau ne veut pas obéir comme on le veut ! Mais je ne me décourage pas.
