A Christmas Gift of Sorts

A little Christmas dress which can be worn any time of year where warmth and comfort is wanted. It has a loose fit, and can be made with or without stripes. Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season!

The pattern:

Kruselings Knitted Striped Dress

Materials: 

2.75 mm (US – 2; UK –  12) knitting needles

Fingering yarn in two colours: Red – colour A, White – colour B (I used Loops & Threads Woolike yarn.)

Tension: 

8 stitches per 1”/2.5cm

Stitches Used:

Stockinette stitch – knit one row, purl next row

Garter stitch – knit every row

Stitches and abbreviations used: 

Knit – k

Purl – p

Make one – inc (pick up loop between stitch just worked and next stitch to be knitted, knit through loop from the top side e.g., the result is a new twisted knit stitch

Sl – slip

St – stitch

Dec – decrease (k 2 tog or p 2 tog)

Psso – pass slipped stitch over stitch just knitted, decreasing one

Note: Dress is knitted from top down on two needles.

Dress:

Beginning at neck edge, with colour A, cast on 29 stitches.

  1. K 3, *k 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last four stitches, k 4.
  2. K 3, *p 1, k 1,*  repeat from star to star to last four stitches, p 1, k 3.
  3. As row one.
  4. K 3, purl to last three stitches, k 3.

Switch to colour B.  From this point on, alternate colours every two rows for pattern.

5) K 6, inc, k 1, inc, k 2, inc, k 1, inc, k 9, inc, k 1, inc, k 2, inc, k 1, inc, k 6 (37 stitches).

6) All purl rows continue as thus: k 3, purl to last three stitches, k 3.

7) K 7, inc, k 1, inc, k 4, inc, k 1, inc, k 11, inc, k 1, inc, k 4, inc, k 1, inc, k 7 (45 stitches). 

8) Purl row.

9) K 8, inc, k 1, inc, k 6, inc, k 1, inc, k 13, inc, k 1, inc, k 6, inc, k 1, inc, k 8 (53 stitches). 

10) Purl row.

11) K 9, inc, k 1, inc, k 8, inc, k 1, inc, k 15, inc, k 1, inc, k 8, inc, k 1, inc, k 9 (61 stitches). 

12) Purl row.

13) K 10, inc, k 1, inc, k 10, inc, k 1, inc, k 17, inc, k 1, inc, k 10, inc, k 1, inc, k 10 (69 stitches). 

14) Purl row.

15) K 11, inc, k 1, inc, k 12, inc, k 1, inc, k 19, inc, k 1, inc, k 12, inc, k 1, inc, k 11 (77 stitches). 

16) Purl row.

17) K 12, inc, k 1, inc, k 14, inc, k 1, inc, k 21, inc, k 1, inc, k 14, inc, k 1, inc, k 12 (84 stitches). 

18) Purl row.

19) K 13, inc, k 1, inc, k 16, inc, k 1, inc, k 23, inc, k 1, inc, k 16, inc, k 1, inc, k 13 (93 stitches). 

20) Purl row.

21) K 14, inc, k 1, inc, k 18, inc, k 1, inc, k 21, inc, k 1, inc, k 18, inc, k 1, inc, k 14 (101 stitches). 

22) Purl row.  Break off colour B.

Divide for sleeves:

23) Knit across 37 stitches.  Turn.

24) K 1, p 20, k 1.  Continue on these 22 stitches for first sleeve, leaving other stitches on stitch holders.  Rejoin colour B, and continue in striped pattern.

Sleeve:

  1. Knit.
  2. K 1, purl to last stitch, k 1.  All purl rows are worked thus.
  3. Knit.
  4. Purl row.
  5. K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last three stitches, k 2 tog, k 1 (20 stitches).
  6. Purl.
  7. Knit.
  8. Purl row.
  9. Knit.
  10. Purl row.
  11. K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to last three stitches, k 2 tog, k 1 (18 stitches).
  12. Purl row.
  13. Knit.
  14. Purl row.
  15. Continue with colour A, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, *p 1, k 1,* repeat from star to star to last three stitches, p 2 tog, k 1 (16 stitches).
  16. *K 1, k 1, p 1,* repeat from star to star to last stitch, k 1.  Cast off all stitches in rib stitch.

Second sleeve: 

With colour A, knit across next 49 stitches.  Turn. 

K 1, purl 20, k 1.

Rejoin colour B, and finish second sleeve as per first sleeve, rows 1 to 16.

Lower Dress:

  1. With colour A, knit across remaining 15 stitches.
  2. K 3, purl to last three stitch, k 3.
  3. Continue knitting in stockinette stitch, keeping the first and last three stitches in garter stitch, changing colours for stripes every two rows, for 6 more rows.

Cast off three stitches in garter stitch for under placket. 

Continue in striped pattern and stockinette stitch for 22 more rows, ending with a colour A stripe.  Work two rows in k 1, p 1 rib.  Cast off in rib.

Darn in all loose yarn ends.  Sew sleeve seams.  Sew back seam to under placket.  Sew bottom edge of under placket on wrong side.  Sew on small snaps, or hook and loop tape, to close back opening.
